Did you know that his name is Louis Szekely? He calls himself "C.K." because that's kind of how you pronounce his Hungarian last name. He's also Mexican, which is pretty funny for some reason. Maybe because of his demeanor and red hair.

He's been my favorite comedian for years, so I'm happy that he is achieving such success, but also a little disappointed now that it's no longer "my thing." That's kind of lame and hipsterish of me. Whatev.

You've likely heard that he sold his latest special directly to fans, and now that he's made $1 million from it, he's giving about half of it away. He just thinks it's too much money for him to have, so he gave a bunch to charity, a bunch to his staff as bonuses, and then used the rest to pay his production costs and himself.

If only more wealthy people in this world were so un-douchey, it would be a much better place. You won't see this guy buying a gold toilet seat any time soon. That's a good thing. He's a good dude. I'm going to adopt his philosophy that he espoused in that comedy special, as quoted in the New York Times:

“You should act in a way that if everyone acted that way, it would be all right,”

You should really do that any time you buy something on line.

I'd prefer to embed this video, but the Bonobos people probably want visitors to their YouTube page to stay and watch other videos about their pants. Great story about some entrepreneurs who have started a great business, selling a fantastic product in one of the worst economic downturns the U.S. has ever seen. Kudos to these dudes.

The Japanese Pop Star of the Future

I heard about this from WWTDD, who read it on Joe Rogan's Twitter. This is the first I've heard, but apparently there's a 3-D hologram named Hatsune Miku that is now a huge star in Japan. The Japanese are so weird. It's so awesome. I lived there for 3 months in 2002 and it's like being on a different planet. I loved it, don't get me wrong, and people often experience "reverse culture shock" when they return to their home countries after a prolonged stay there. Upon returning to the U.S., I experienced a rather annoying phase during which I would say "you know, in Japan..." about how much better practically everything was over there.

Here is a video of one of "her" performances, along with an enthusiastic crowd. Her singing voice is created with a computer program. I suppose this isn't much different than loving a cartoon character, like Homer Simpson, for example. I have said many times that I wish he were a real person and I were friends with him.

The concert footage of Hatsune Miku sort of reminds me of the Floston, Paradise shows in The Fifth Element.

I've been looking around for costume ideas for several friends, as well as my girlfriend. She got a couple of lame ones from the internet where it's just a bag with a bunch of ill-fitting components meant to look like a popular figure or character. I think the way you make a good costume is by using as much of your own stuff as possible (I once dressed as Neo without buying even one thing), and buying the crazy stuff that you might not have owned, like say, a patent leather yellow jacket when you're dressing as "Live at Wembley Freddie Mercury," or a clear rain jacket for Pat Bateman.

Well, I thought that "Michelle Jackson" would be a good costume and I started poking around Google. This is what I found.

She's not going to buy one of these, but it did give me some ideas. This is gonna be one sweet costume.

The Chinese are planning to rule the 21st Century with the Indians and the Brasileiros, while over here we're still number 1, but clearly on the decline. At 59-59, in their fifth set of the first round match at Wimbledon, Isner and Mahut have been at it for 10 hours over the past 2 days. Play has been suspended for a second day due to the fading sunlight. They have both beaten the previous record for most aces in a match, 78, with almost 100 each.

One of the many reasons I love tennis so much is the fact that a match is never over until the last point has been completed. This is the case even if a tie-breaker is played, since you have to win by two points. Even on match point, down 0-6, 0-6, 0-5, Love-40, the match is not over.

These guys are showing incredible (preternatural?) mental and physical fitness. I only hope that the ending is not anti-climactic. Whoever wins is lucky that the match is delayed once again, since he will have a little more recovery time before the following one. I can't imagine one's body performing well after such wear and tear.

In any case, you may watch practically any important sporting event on ESPN3.com these days. Play resumes tomorrow at some point. I can't watch anymore. Let me know how it ends.

Crackberry News

I don't know how people use the standard, full QWERTY keyboard on Blackberry Bolds and Curves and the like. I'm now on my third Blackberry since 2004, starting with the slender 7100 series. I have pretty long, skinny fingers, and I know people with some pretty stubby digits. How they use a crowded, tiny button keyboard is beyond me. I have been waiting for at least a year to replace my Pearl, and my prayers seem like they just might have been answered, though this phone is not yet available in the U.S.

She will be mine. Oh yes, she will be mine. They even have a version that employs the old ABC, DEF keyboard, should you prefer that to a QWERTY (which is laid out like a computer keyboard, in case you don't know what that means).

Miami's up-and-coming rapper, Black Bobby, has just released his second mixtape in 7 months. The first two tracks are the standouts, in my opinion, but there's something for everyone here. Old school, Kanye-like soul sounds, techno beats, and some original production by boy-wonder, R-Cubed, a local producer who's barely old enough to get into an R-rated movie.

Ian Fleming's short story "007 in New York" is rumored to be the basis for this film. It was first published in the The New York Herald Tribune in 1963 and then in the US edition only of Fleming's 'Thrilling Cities". It was first published in the UK in November 1999 in The Sunday Times magazine supplement as a tie-in with the film release of the Bond movie The World Is Not Enough (1999). Its working title was "Reflections in a Carey Cadillac" and its original title was "Agent 007 in New York" when published in the NY Herald Tribune. The story features a Bond Girl called Solange, a name which was used for a character in Casino Royale (2006). For the first time in 2002, the short-story was added to the "Octopussy and The Living Daylights" compendium which includes these two short stories plus "The Property of a Lady". I got my girlfriend a Netflix subscription for Christmas, since we had recently gotten to a point where we were renting a movie every week from Blockbuster. Contributing to Blockbuster's demise, I decided that it only made sense to spend the 10 bucks/month for unlimited movies from Netflix. I thought I would miss going to the video store and browsing through the movies, but I don't. At all.

Now that we have Netflix, we don't watch as many movies as we used to, of course. But alas, Netflix just sent me an email that if you own a Wii, which my girlfriend does, then you can order a free CD that converts your Wii into a Roku-type box that streams Netflix to your TV. What an age in which we live. My parents remember the days before they owned a television. My mother literally came to the U.S. on a boat in the 1940s.

There is a new app, called Square, created by the co-founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, that turns one's iPhone (and other smartphones, in the future) into a credit card reader and payment system. Reading the following article is pretty hilarious for someone with a seriously Irish name like me (Colin Patrick O'Higgins). The major players are the aforementioned Mr. Dorsey, Jim McKelvey, and Tristan O'Tierney. Sounds more like a drinking team than a group of enginerds! So, an Irishman, an Indian, and an Asian walk into a bar...I'm getting off track.

Halloween arrives in only 17 days! No doubt, 85% of people will go as pirates, but of the remaining 15%, at least 8 will go as MJ. How do I come up with these figures? I love Halloween and I have a gift for it.

If you decide to go as the King of Pop, please go to this site and do it right. You can get an exact replica of his sequined glove for a mere $550. Believe me, it doesn't work if you buy a cotton glove and try to glue sequins and glitter on it. I did that in 2001 and I am still ashamed that I did not execute better. I wish I had a photo of that costume handy, but I'm fairly certain I have one in storage.

The B Movie Team

I used to get all psyched for sequels to movies I loved or when they would turn old TV shows into blockbuster Hollywood movies. I even got excited about the GI Joe movie before I started hearing about all the production problems and the fact that it wasn't screened early for critics. That's a very bad sign.

You know what? When they make movies about old TV shows, they almost always suck, because if they had a good idea for an action movie, they wouldn't need the gimmick of an old TV show (that's probably really terrible if you were to watch it today, by the way, but happened to be good during its time) to get people to watch it.

Doing remakes of movies from other countries, however, seems to work pretty well. Maybe they're smarter than we are.

I do have to make an exception for Miami Vice, even though many people think that was also terrible. The movie was directed by the creator of the TV show and more of an embodiment of his vision anyway. I loved it. Saw it twice in the theater and had a Miami Vice theme party on opening night. If you didn't like it the first time, give it another shot. Have I ever steered you wrong?

Oh, so the reason I was prompted to make this post is that they're filming a movie version of The A Team. As soon as I saw that on WWTDD, I heard the theme song in my head. Which brings me to another point of contention. Why don't they include the theme songs in the movie versions??? In the 80s the theme songs were the best part of the show. They got you all psyched up to watch. I give you Air Wolf, as an example. The opening song is so awesome that you watch the show even though it's terrible.

The 10th round, one of the greatest ever, sent the fight into legendary status as Corrales survived two rough knockdowns (helped, no doubt, by spitting out his mouthpiece twice) to rally for the improbable TKO victory in the final minute. It was jaw-dropping stuff. Fights simply get no better. It turned out to be Corrales' final victory. He lost his next three (including a rematch) and, sadly, two years to the day of the fight, Corrales died in a motorcycle accident. It's an anniversary I never forget.

Tennis elbow is NOT awesome. Not even "pretty awesome". What is awesome is a website I found called Discomfort Free that shows a self-massage technique that I just tried with great success.

She goes on for a while, but the basic idea is to place your hurt arm on a padded surface in front of you and use your other arm to make a sawing motion across the forearm and palm. This technique helps both tennis elbow and carpal tunnel syndrome. Try it!

Everyone knows I love Kanye, so I got a few heads-ups that he was featured on last night's South Park. I haven't even seen the episode, but I assumed it was a pretty scathing portrayal. I expect nothing less from Stone and Parker. They are comic geniuses and Scientologists (I love that spell check thinks that's not a word) are the only people who take themselves so seriously that they don't think South Park is funny.

Do you ever see something that you think is so awesome that you kind of hate it? Like when you live in Miami and there are gorgeous women everywhere and for some reason it's annoying? This is in spite of the fact that I'm super charming and sometimes even get to smooch those sexy ladies. My mother tells me I'm handsome all the time, so I know I am at least a little bit.

We're going to make s'mores maybe. We won't even have to make a fire since it's like a billion degrees out already. 4 Door Coupe!

My wise guy little brother used to yell "4 door coupe!" whenever a Mercedes CLS would drive by. "Coupe" is an Americanized version of the adjective form of the French word "couper", meaning "to cut".

Anyway, I'm a Porsche purist and would own neither the abominable Boxster, the Cayenne, the least-objectionable Cayman, nor the fakest-of-all-time 944.

I do, however, consider the 928 (of Risky Business fame) and the iconic 959 to be true Porsches along with the legendary work of art, the...911. I salivate slightly when thinking about the 911.

Anyway, due to the popularity of the CLS and Maserati's Quattroporte (not actually a coupe, but an imaginatively-named 4 door sports sedan whose name means "4 doors"), many other manufacturers are planning on introducing their own sports sedans or 4 door coupes(!). The plane that Steve Fossett was flying when he went missing last year has been found. The wreckage suggests the crash was unsurvivable and that he likely died instantly. What an awesome way to go. I would be pretty psyched to acheive the designation of "millionaire adventurer".

My family has a wonderful Thanksgiving tradition of going to New York (City) and hitting a couple of nice restaurants, a museum or two, maybe a comedy show on the Upper East Side, some shopping on 5th Ave., a little Wii with Mike Santulli, etc.

The highlight, ostensibly, is the Broadway show we pick out far in advance. The problem is that most of them suck. We started with Les Miserables and it hasn't gotten any better. Phantom and Rent were great, but pretty much everything else has been a waste of time and money. Last year, when Broadway went on strike and our planned Spamalot outing was canceled, we just did other, better stuff with our time. No sooner had I convinced myself that the show should NOT go on, when this news came into my Outlook inbox from my friend Andreas -

I don't know too many people who think you should be able to vote and die for your country but not buy a beer. The federal government has been pushing the states around for decades by threatening to withhold critical highway funding if they resist the 21 year-old drinking age.
